The Ontario Alliance for the Prevention of Preterm Birth and Stillbirth – The Role of the SOGT
Preterm birth happens in only 8% of births but is responsible for 75% of neonatal deaths and 80% of newborn illness in Canada. It is a leading cause of disability, with high rates of associated cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease, neurological disabilities, hearing problems and blindness. Preterm birth and its complications are immensely stressful for families and expensive for Canadian taxpayers.
Recent scientific discoveries are showing that many premature births are preventable.
It is now proven that information and simple screening tests and treatments offered in the first half of pregnancy, like having an ultrasound or taking a daily baby aspirin, can result in longer pregnancies for women at risk of premature birth. With premature babies, every week counts. We intend to close the gap between what is known about preventing preterm birth and stillbirth and what is implemented on a province-wide basis, enabling all families to take advantage of leading research and the best information and treatments available. With the Alliance programs, we expect to reduce premature birth by at least 15%. That translates to more than 1000 babies avoiding admission to NICUs and having a healthy start instead. It means 15% fewer children and families being confronted by the short and long-term challenges begun by preterm birth. It means preventing up to 50% of stillbirths, replacing the experience of many bereaved families with live born infants.
