Dr. Howard Ovens, former Chief of the Department of Emergency Services, Sinai Health System, has been in emergency practice since 1982. He has been very involved in policy issues related to emergency medical services and has served on many regional, provincial and national committees. He has published and spoken nationally and internationally on issues such as ED overcrowding, mandatory reporting of gunshot wounds, the lessons of SARS, and the impact of shift work.
He also holds the rank of Professor at the Dept. of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He has been the Ontario Provincial Lead for Emergency Medicine since 2009– in that role he co-chairs the Emergency Services Advisory Committee. He continues to practice in the ED at Mount Sinai Hospital.
